Valuable knowledge for parents: Chiropractic and children

Chiropractic is often associated with the treatment of back pain in adults, but children can also benefit from it. What is different about chiropractic for children and teenagers and what conditions can it treat? In this article, you will find out why more and more parents are opting for chiropractic care for their children.

At Chiropraktik Lounge Munich, we regularly invite all parents to have their children examined by us free of charge. During the examination, we carefully check whether there are any misalignments in the spine and how your child has developed so far. We pay particular attention to areas that are frequently affected by birth trauma, falls or postural damage. Our chiropractic team is specially trained in the chiropractic care of infants, children and adolescents.

We see it as our important mission and contribution to promote the health and quality of life of children so that they can develop well and fulfill their potential.

Children and chiropractic?

From birth, a child’s body is exposed to considerable stress. Birth itself (including KISS and KIDD syndrome), falls while learning to walk and postural damage from prolonged sitting can affect the spine. The huge lack of movement in growing children in the digital age is enormous and affects healthy development on a physical, mental and emotional level. A misalignment of the spine can affect the nervous system and lead to various complaints, such as

  • Sleep disorders
  • concentration problems
  • digestive problems
  • Recurrent ear infections
  • immunodeficiency
  • Postural disorders
  • scoliosis
  • headaches and migraines
  • Behavioral problems
  • Overexcitement
  • depression
  • and much, much more

The cerebrum and its role in posture

The cerebrum plays a central role in posture. It processes sensorimotor input – information from the sensory organs and the perception of movement. It uses this to coordinate movements and regulate posture. The cerebrum acts primarily by inhibiting and restricting excessive or uncoordinated movements in order to ensure balance.

Movement is the key

In order for the cerebrum to work effectively, it is dependent on continuous movement input. This is precisely where the problem now lies, as children today move too little. Such sensory information comes primarily from receptors in the musculoskeletal system, especially the spinal column. It has a high density of valuable receptors. These receptors provide data on the position and movement of the body in space, which is essential for postural control.

The nervous system needs signals

The spine also provides a central transmission highway for signals between the body and the brain. If there are disturbances or misalignments here, this can change the sensorimotor input and impair the function of the cerebrum. This has an effect on posture and general balance.

Crossing of the cerebral hemispheres

There is a particularly sensitive area in the upper cervical spine: the region of the 1st and 2nd cervical vertebrae (atlas and axis). This is where important nerve pathways cross to the other side of the body. Injuries or misalignments in this area – often as a result of strain during childbirth – can lead to pain:

  • Asymmetries
  • permanent stress in the nervous system and
  • a disturbed balance.

Injuries and misalignments

The consequences of injuries or misalignments in the upper cervical vertebrae can prevent the cerebrum from effectively fulfilling its task of postural control. This can have the following effects:

  • limited mobility
  • muscular imbalances
  • postural problems
  • chronic stress
  • health complaints

Chiropractic solution

Targeted chiropractic adjustments to the spine, particularly the upper cervical vertebrae, can improve receptor function and the quality of sensorimotor input. This supports the cerebrum in its task of controlling posture and helps to reduce asymmetries and imbalances. Watch a video about this on our channel!
