The piriformis muscle is a muscle of the gluteal region. It stabilizes the hip joint in the socket and thus keeps us upright. The sciatic nerve passes through this muscle, so hardening in the piriformis muscle can lead to irritation of the sciatic nerve and cause a condition called pseudoradiculopathy. This is referred to as piriformis syndrome.
Trigger points in this area are often accompanied by blockages and misalignments at the illiosacral joint.
Hardening of the piriformis muscle is a sign of chronic pelvic misalignment.
Chiropractic treatments are absolutely necessary to break the vicious circle of blockage and muscle hardening.
